*We'd wanted Ben Greenfield on the show for a long time, and we expected to talk about biohacking. Instead, he gave us one of the most honest conversations about family we've ever recorded.*

About ten years ago, he says, he was all over the world: racing Ironman triathlons, speaking, running his businesses and the podcast. He was in full build mode, and business was at the top of the list.

> "I was not a present father, I was not a present husband." ([\~11:00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44Q3v%5FvmA6c&t=660s))

He told us he and his wife were growing distant, and the "scary d word" started going through his head. He was still going to church and casually reading his Bible. That's when he got down on his knees and started praying more seriously.

He rebuilt his priorities in a specific order: his faith first, then his wife ("oxygen masks" first, he says), then the kids, then his own health and fitness, and business last on the totem pole.

He also noticed a trap a lot of working professionals fall into. They tell themselves they'll spend time with family once they hit 35 and have enough money. Then 40 happens, and 45, and 50, and the kids are 18 and gone.

So he and his family sat down and wrote it out: core values, a family mission statement and a family constitution. They even turned the mission into a family crest that's on their pepper grinders, pillows, pickleball paddles and hoodies.

Every day runs on two anchors. At 7 AM the whole family meets for about 15 minutes of Bible reading, prayer and logistics. At 7 PM they meet in the kitchen with the food each person was assigned to make, then a song, a book chapter and games. He still travels, but he says the routine changed everything at home.

> "When I'm home, I'm really home." ([\~28:00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44Q3v%5FvmA6c&t=1680s))

That's the Ben Greenfield we sat down with: a biohacker whose best protocol turned out to be a family huddle. Below is the rest of the conversation, from his family constitution to why his home is less extreme than his videos.

**TL;DR:** About a decade ago, Ben Greenfield says, he was racing Ironman, speaking and building businesses, and his marriage was in trouble. He reset his priorities to faith first, then his wife, then the kids, then health, with business last. Today his family runs on a written family constitution: values, a mission statement and a family crest, plus a 15-minute morning huddle at 7 AM and family dinner at 7 PM. He says his home life is far less extreme than his biohacking videos suggest.

**Who is Ben Greenfield?** A former Ironman triathlete, author, podcaster and one of the best-known names in biohacking. He's married with sons.

## Key takeaways

- He says he wasn't a present father or husband during his Ironman and build years (\~11:00).
- He ranks faith, spouse, kids, health and then business (\~12:00).
- His family wrote values, a mission statement and a family constitution, and turned them into a family crest (\~14:00).
- A 15-minute 7 AM family huddle uses the ACTS prayer pattern: adoration, confession, thanksgiving, supplication (\~25:00).
- At the 7 PM family dinner, each person cooks their assigned part, followed by a book chapter and games (\~27:00).

## The family constitution

Ben says families that avoid the "rags to riches to rags" cycle usually set clear rules for how wealth passes down. His family started with values, built a mission statement from them, and then wrote a family constitution (\~14:00–15:00). The crest puts it all in one picture: he's a tree at the top, his wife is the seed at the bottom, and each son has his own symbol.

## Morning and evening huddles

At 7 AM he reads and teaches from a study Bible, the family prays using the ACTS acronym, then they sort out the day's logistics and finish with a family hug, all in about 15 minutes (\~25:00–26:00). At 7 PM, everyone brings the dinner they were assigned that morning. They sing, pray, spend about 10 minutes on that week's book, and play games (\~27:00).

## Less extreme than the videos

He knows there are "a million videos" of him in a hyperbaric chamber or under red light. At home, he says, it's "not that extreme at all": the Bible on audio, stretching and foam rolling (\~39:00).
