**By The Meat Mafia (Harry Gray and Brett Ender)**

*Long before anyone called him the carnivore doctor, Shawn Baker was a college biology student who got sidetracked by rugby.*

He joined the Air Force in the early 1990s to keep playing. His day job, he says, was training to launch nuclear missiles. The Air Force later paid for him to finish medical school.

The sports kept going. He set American records in the deadlift as a drug-free powerlifter, won titles in the Highland Games and later set records in rowing, all while working for decades as an orthopedic surgeon.

Then he hit his mid-40s.

> "You know, it's getting older, fatter, sicker. Things are hurting, and I didn't like that very frankly." ([08:30](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJiJoUgLmo0&t=510s))

He says he had maxed out the training side, so he turned to food. He tried going low-fat and heavy on salads. He lost weight, but he says he was miserable: tired, cold and grouchy.

Paleo felt better. Keto came next. Then, in 2016, he found a small group of people eating only meat, which was usually called zero carb back then. He says he's the one who started calling it the carnivore diet.

Years later, he says he's still eating steak most days and has seen no drop in his performance. His big point is how simple he thinks eating should be.

> "nutrition shouldn't be complicated. You shouldn't need a PhD to figure out how to eat." ([26:15](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJiJoUgLmo0&t=1575s))

That's the Shawn Baker we talked with: a surgeon and lifelong athlete who keeps his own plate simple. Below is more on carbs and performance, why people eat, and why he started Revero. This is his view, not medical advice. Talk to your own clinician before you make a big change to your diet.
